Background on 'Baby Roulette' from the author
This book draws on my own personal experience of IVF and the clandestine world of fertility treatment. It is designed to appeal to the baby-making generation, some of whom may perceive IVF as an easy lifestyle solution to delaying having children. The novel explores the emotional difficulties couples face when embarking on fertility treatment.
Having been given the devastating news at thirty that my reproductive age was that of a woman in her forties and that I could go into a premature menopause at any time I was shocked to find that having a child using my own eggs was hard to negotiate with the medical profession. It was a race against the clock. The NHS waiting lists made it impossible and the tendency of private clinics to select their patients to bolster success rates made it very difficult.
Refusing to accept no for an answer I eventually found a clinic that understood my predicament and wanted to treat me despite the potential impact to their success rates. This resilience and determination, combined with a very supportive clinic, resulted in the most wonderful gift ever, my son.
Rather than write yet another IVF textbook, I felt that the novel provided an opportunity to get a serious message across in an accessible, humorous and insightful way, whilst reflecting that the journey is at times emotionally painful and distressing. I hope that the book will provide some measure of support to those couples either considering or undergoing IVF.
